Born on 12th November, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, Anne Hathaway now stands at a height of 5 feet 8 inches. Her father, Gerald Hathaway is a lawyer and her mother, Kate McCauley, an actress. Anne has 2 brothers, Michael who is older and Thomas who is younger to her. Anne Hathaway’s inclination towards a career in acting is probably because her mother provided her with the inspiration. Anne however, had other plans till she turned 15 years of age. Raised by a Catholic in New Jersey, she aspired to become a nun but her plans changed thereafter.
The beautiful and intelligent Anne Hathaway participated in many school plays from her childhood days. Such was her talent that she even gained a nomination for the best performance in a high school play titled ‘Once Upon a Mattress’. This was the time when she studied at Millburn High School, which gave her the platform to participate in many plays. From thereon, she enacted in many roles that helped her to hone her skills as a stage actress. Anne always looked up to Audrey Hepburn and Meryl Streep as her idols.
Her first breakthrough happened when she was chosen for the television series titled ‘Get Real’ in 1999 for the first season. The director, Garry Marshall, instantly loved her first audition where he realized it could only be the talented Anne who could play the role of ‘Mia Thermopolis’. ‘The Princess Diaries’ is a film that has drama and a touch of humor as well. Released in 2001, ‘The Princess Diaries’ earned great reviews from critics all over and also gave Anne, the much-needed media attention. Anne also received great reviews for her role as ‘Lili’ in the concert ‘Carnival!’. A sequel to ‘The Princess Diaries’ titled ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’ did not really do as well as expected. At this point, Anne Hathaway was regarded as a perfect role model for children. She appeared in films such as ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ and ‘Ella Enchanted’ which did not really create a sensation for her career.
Her role in ‘Havoc’ portrayed Anne in a different light. From a role model for children, Anne was seen in bold scenes in this movie and critics labeled it as a move to break away from the title bestowed upon her. Anne, however, denied the same. Her role in the movie, ‘Brokeback Mountain’ in 2005, gave the right boost to her career. This movie was nominated for many awards.
Anne faced havoc in her personal life due to her relationship with Raffaello Follieri. In June 2008, Raffaello was arrested for fraud, which left Anne in a disturbed state. Around 2006, Anne tasted success with the film, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. In this film, Anne plays the role of a writer who ends up being an assistant for a fashion magazine. Her role as ‘Andrea Sachs’ brought her into the limelight. Anne has also starred in the movie ‘Get Smart’ in 2008, which earned her rave reviews. Apart from this movie, she was also seen in ‘Passengers’, ‘Becoming Jane’ and ‘Rachel Getting Married’.
