Angelina Jolie Voight was born on 4th June, 1975 to Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand in Los Angeles. Jon was an established superstar when Angelina was born and won the Oscar for the best actor for his performance in the Movie ‘Coming Home’ when Angelina was just two. Around this time, he also split with Angelina’s mother who moved to New York with Angelina and Angelina’s brother James.

When Angelina was 11, she began to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She also undertook a few film studies at the New York University and also joined the Met Theatre Group in Los Angeles. When she turned 16, she began modeling and also appeared in a few music videos.

Angelina and Hollywood

Around the mid-1990’s Angelina started appearing in various small films like Hackers (1995), Foxfire (1996) and True Women (1997) where her roles were noticed and appreciated. She went on to win a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination for her role in the movie ‘George Wallace’ (1997). Not only did she win the same award and nomination again in the next year, she also won the SAG Award for her role of a sensitive and wild child in the HBO production ‘Gia’ (1998).

In 1999, Angelina won the leading role in the feature film, ‘The Bone Collector’ starring alongside Denzel Washington. Later in the same year, she gave a powerful performance in the movie ‘Girl, Interrupted’ along with Winona Ryder. Although, the movie did not do well as the box office, Angelina went on to win the Golden Globe, the SAG Award and the Academy Award for the best leading actress in a supporting role.

In 2001, the first movie of the Lara Croft series was released. The character of Lara Croft was inspired from a very popular video game and was a female cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond. Although the critics were unimpressed with the movie, the movie went on to garner $275 Million at the box office.

Angelina and Controversies

As Angelina gained prominence, various aspects of her controversial personal life became news. She divorced her husband Jonny Lee Miller in 2000 to marry Billy Bob Thornton. Angelina was Billy’s fifth wife and twenty years younger than her. Further, during their marriage, they wore a vial containing the other’s blood around their neck. But this marriage too failed and the couple split in 2002.

In 2004, Angelina started shooting for ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ along with Brad Pitt. There were plenty of rumors that the two were having an affair while filming for the movie. However, Angelina claimed that she would never have an affair with a married man as she has seen how hurt her mother was when her father had cheated on her. Brad was married to Jennifer Anniston during this time.

Despite all the denials from both sides, Jennifer and Brad split up in January 2005 and their divorce was finalized later that year. Since then Angelina and Brad have been together.

Angelina and Children

While shooting for a Croft movie in Cambodia, Angelina witnessed the natural beauty, culture and poverty of the country. This began the humanitarian phase of her life. She began to visit various refugee camps around the world and was also appointed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as a Goodwill Ambassador. She has written down her experiences at the refugee camps in the book titled ‘Notes from My Travels’. The profits made from these books go to the UNHCR.

In 2002, Angelina adopted a Cambodian refugee boy and named him Maddox. She later adopted an Ethiopian refugee girl and named her Zahara. She became pregnant with Brad Pitt’s child in 2006 and gave birth to a baby girl Shiloh in May.

Angelina and Brad Pitt want to adopt another baby now. Angelina has stated that she now want to spend most of her time in humanitarian efforts. With the money that she makes as an actress, she saves one-third of it, spends one-third on living expenses and donates the rest of it to charity.

Angelina has lived life on her own terms and has made a mark for herself moving beyond the controversies.
